CLOTHES MAKE THE MAN

An extraordinary mens blog for the ordinary man

This season’s hair styles – Competition time !!!

WAHL’s, Artistic Director, Simon Shaw

Today, we’re looking ahead to the top Summer hair trends for men. We’ll tell you everything you need to know to make sure you’re ahead in the style stakes, from what to ask for at the barbers, to how to recreate and maintain the look at home. With top advice from WAHL’s, Artistic Director, Simon Shaw, and what to wear to complement the look.

The Slick back under cut as seen in Prada’s S/S12 campaign

First up is the slick back undercut – this is a classic look, dating back to the 1920s and 1930s, and it has been catapulted into the limelight today by the popular Boardwalk Empire series in which the character James Darmody sports this distinctive style. It has drifted in and out of fashion over the years, enjoying a revival in the 1980s under the pseudonym of the ‘Synth cut’ because of its popularity amongst synth bands at the time. Now, with the resurgence in popularity of classic barbering, the slick back undercut is back on top. The sides can be cut with WAHL Easy Style clippers, which are great for precise trimming. Simon recommends that the longer hair on the top should then be straightened and slicked back with pomade. “The disconnection and contrast between the long and short lengths is what makes this style such a high impact look,” he explains, “The look is clean and sharp”. It is a vintage look but it can still look modern and edgy today.

If it’s good enough for Becks fellas

This season, men are also looking back to the 1950s teddy boys for inspiration and the Rockabilly look is set to be huge. Elvis and James Dean are the icons of the era and we predict guys will be channelling the greaser look with longer length hair on top and shorter length at the back and sides. This is a look that previously enjoyed a come back in the 1970s and 1980s and it’s back again with all guns blazing! Simon recommends combing pomade through the hair “For a slick wet-look,” and “Teasing the hair at the front with your fingers to add definition to curls”.

The Indie band cut as seen at the Burberry Show

Last up is the ever-enduring Indie boy look. It’s a cut that has been around for a good while now and it looks set to continue well into the summer and longer. You can re-create this look with the WAHL Easy Style clippers, which gives you more power than standard clipper motors meaning you can cut thicker hair more easily. Simon explains that this style works for both straight and curly hair but emphasises that texture is a must; “You can achieve the look with sea salt spray to create the necessary dishevelled texture, and clay to hold it in shape”.
